Earned Media Still Supplies Most AI Citations. What the Latest Data Means for PR and Brand Visibility
Muck Rack's May 2026 study found earned media accounted for 84% of citations in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answers, with paid content at 0.3%, and other trackers point the same way with different definitions. For agencies, press coverage now works as an input to AI answers, with recency, outlet choice and query type shaping what gets cited.
If you want a brand to show up in AI-generated answers, the most consistent data point of the past year says the path runs through other people's websites, not your own ads. In the third edition of its "What Is AI Reading?" study, released May 7, 2026, Muck Rack found that earned media accounted for 84% of the citations generative AI systems attached to their answers. Paid and advertorial content accounted for 0.3%.
The finding is not new, and that is the point. Muck Rack said earned media has held at 82% to 89% of citations across all three editions of the study going back to July 2025. "Three editions in, the data keeps telling the same story: earned media is what AI trusts," Muck Rack co-founder and CEO Greg Galant said in the announcement.
What Muck Rack Measured
The May 2026 edition analyzed more than 25 million links across 17 industries, based on responses from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to realistic consumer prompts. Muck Rack's definition of "earned" is broad: it includes journalism, academic research, government sources, encyclopedic sites and third-party corporate content. Journalism on its own made up 27% of cited sources, and more than 20,000 distinct journalism outlets were cited.
The platforms behave differently. According to Muck Rack, ChatGPT included citations in 96% of responses (about five per answer), and its most-cited domain was Wikipedia. Gemini cited sources in 82% of responses (about eight per answer), with Reddit as its top domain. Claude cited in 55% of responses but averaged 13 citations when it did, with PubMed Central at the top.
Two details matter for PR teams. First, query type changes the mix: Muck Rack found journalism citations appeared more than twice as often in answers about industry trends as in "how-to" answers, and press releases showed up almost exclusively in industry-trend responses, at 3.5 times the rate seen in "best-of" queries. Second, recency counts. More than half of journalism citations pointed to articles published within the previous 12 months, with citations dropping sharply for coverage older than six months.
The outlet mix is also not what many publicists would expect. Axios appeared in ChatGPT's top three cited domains in 13 of 17 industries, the only journalism outlet to do so, while The New York Times and Reuters did not make the top three in any industry.
Other Data Points in the Same Direction, With Caveats
Muck Rack sells media database and PR software, so its numbers are best read alongside other trackers. Meltwater, another PR-software vendor, published its own figures on May 28, 2026 from its GenAI Lens product, covering roughly 5.35 million citations across eight systems including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It classified 39.5% of April 2026 citations as earned/news media, up from 38.3% in March, with press releases at 0.4%. The gap with Muck Rack's 84% comes largely from definitions: Meltwater puts owned content, blogs and documentation into a separate "other" bucket that made up 50.3% of citations. Both vendors agree that news coverage is a large, stable share and that wire releases on their own are a small one.
Platform behavior is also volatile. A Semrush study published November 10, 2025, which tracked more than 230,000 prompts across ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity between July and October 2025, found that ChatGPT's citation of Reddit fell from close to 60% of responses in early August to around 10% by mid-September, while Wikipedia dropped from roughly 55% of responses to under 20%. Semrush said those swings were specific to ChatGPT; AI Mode and Perplexity stayed comparatively stable. Semrush also reported that Forbes doubled its ChatGPT citations after the September shift.
For Google, traditional rankings are a weaker proxy than they were. Search Engine Journal reported on March 2, 2026 that an Ahrefs analysis of 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs found only 38% of cited pages ranked in Google's top 10, compared with 76% in Ahrefs' July 2025 study. Another 31.2% came from positions 11 to 100 and 31.0% from beyond position 100. Ahrefs itself cautioned that its parsing methodology had improved since the earlier study, so part of the drop may reflect better detection rather than a pure change in how Google picks sources.
Why This Shifts the PR Conversation
Taken together, the data points to a simple model: AI systems favor sources that look independent, recent and topical, and they lean on journalism most heavily when a user asks about where an industry is going. Those are exactly the questions B2B buyers and business owners ask when they are forming a shortlist.
That reframes the value of coverage. A trade-press article or an analyst-style explainer in a publication an AI system already trusts can now be retrieved and summarized long after the news cycle, at least for about a year. A press release on a wire, by contrast, rarely becomes the cited source unless the query is specifically about industry developments. And because top-ranked pages no longer dominate AI Overview citations the way they did, an agency cannot assume its client's SEO rankings will carry over into AI answers.
The evidence still has limits. Most of these studies come from vendors that sell monitoring or PR software, they use different prompt sets and definitions, and none shows a direct causal link between a specific placement and a specific AI mention.
What This Means for Your Business
For PR and content agencies, earned media now has a second audience: the retrieval systems behind AI answers. Pitch plans should prioritize outlets that show up in AI citations for the client's category, which may be trade publications or outlets like Axios rather than the biggest national names. Checking which domains the major assistants cite for a client's core questions before building a media list is now a reasonable first step.
Recency argues for a steady cadence of coverage over one big launch moment, since citation value appears to fade after six to twelve months. Trend-oriented stories, data releases and expert commentary fit the query types where journalism and even press releases are cited most.
For business owners and in-house marketers, the practical takeaway is that paid placements and advertorials do almost nothing for AI visibility, according to Muck Rack's 0.3% figure. Budget for third-party credibility (earned coverage, research others will cite, accurate profiles on reference sites) and ask agencies to show which cited sources they are targeting, not just how many placements they landed.
